Hospice & Palliative Care

A Unicorn in Healthcare

VHOCC was founded in 1978 by Rose Crumb, a visionary nurse who recognized the critical need for home-based, end-of-life care long before most of the country. When the first hospice licensure law passed in 1988, lawmakers had the foresight to carve out a licensure exemption for volunteer hospices that did not bill for services. This gave VHOCC the ability to continue working in partnership with patients' existing care teams supporting end-of-life care. VHOCC has the freedom to provide both hospice and palliative care to patients for as long as necessary. Our clinical team focuses on patient- and family-centered care that meets individual needs while maintaining expected standards of practice.

Hospice & Palliative Care at VHOCC is:

The hospice/palliative care team at VHOCC is made up of paid nurses and certified nursing aides. In addition, a team of over 180 volunteers provide respite care, specialized therapies, and other needed support to patients and families. The VHOCC team works in partnership with the patient's existing care team which includes their family, friends, and caregivers as well as the patient's existing medical providers, home health, pharmacies, etc.

Some aspects of VHOCC's care are similar to Medicare-billing hospices and some aspects differ. VHOCC strives to maintain the standards of practice expected of all other hospices.
